2 hours
College requires students to read and understand complex texts across many settings (science, literature, professional writing, etc.).  In this course, students will focus on strengthening their reading skills by analyzing a variety of texts. Students will interact with rhetorical situation, purpose, and audience. Students taking this course will learn strategies to improve their reading fluency (speed of reading), comprehension (understanding of the content), and retention (ability to remember and recall.)  The expected hours of work will be in class reading engagement exercises where students will read a variety of texts, be assessed on fluency, speed, comprehension, recall, and analysis. Group work as assigned that will ask students to anticipate and assist in the comprehension and analysis of texts in group situations. Students will be expected to teach classmates aspects of the reading process to demonstrate mastery of the concepts and content of the reading. Students will be asked to read and write short, guided assignments outside of class time in an ongoing basis.   UG
