LIT 399 - Foreign Travel - United Kingdom 3 hours The study tour includes two travel days and eight days on location in England. Instruction will be offered by three faculty sponsors, a 24-hour-a-day tour guide, and various experts attached to specific parts of the tour. For those seeking literature credit, this course offers on-site visits to many of the places mentioned in the course reading assignments, including sites in Edinburgh and London. To fulfill the purpose of ONU’s international culture requirement, the curriculum covers geography, language, history, philosophy, art, literature, and religion within the United Kingdom. Even though Americans share Britain’s language, we do not share the cultural experiences of Great Britain, with its Celtic, Norman, Anglo-Saxon, Roman, and German historical elements, nor do we share its current multicultural diversity that stems from its colonial holdings. Because of the varied cultures represented in the U.K., knowledge of diverse kinds can be gained quite quickly on this small country, thus making this study tour very beneficial to the student who needs to view life experiences in wider contexts. The course will culminate with the actual travel; it will begin with an overview of videos, lectures, and web sites, guided by teachers who will confer with each student in order to customize the experience for specific interests.
