MUTH 260 - Jazz Theory I 2 hours The study of fundamental theoretical concepts and tools necessary to understand jazz and contemporary harmony and theory in a diatonic context. This will apply to instrumental performance, compositional and arranging skill, music pedagogy, and overall musicianship in jazz and contemporary genres. The main course elements are: jazz notation and nomenclature; chord structures, function, and extensions; Roman numeral and functional analysis; common jazz and contemporary chord progressions; melodic function and analysis; re-harmonization techniques; chord-scales and commonly used scales in these genres; the blues form; modal theory and harmony.
