Completion of the 19 hours of courses, which includes 100 practicum hours in a bilingual or multilingual setting, leads to the State of Illinois English as a Second Language (ESL) endorsement, as long as a grade of ‘C-’ or better is earned in each course.
The ESL endorsement can be added to an Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) for the grade level(s) authorized by the license. For an ESL middle school endorsement, EDUC 767 and EDUC 768 or their equivalents must be completed. Upon completion of the ESL endorsement requirements, one additional course, ESL 615 - Methods and Materials for Teaching Limited-English-Proficient Students in Bilingual Programs , and passing the Target Language Proficiency (TLP) Test would also lead to a Bilingual endorsement. Individuals who complete the ESL endorsement through Olivet may apply the 100 hours of practicum experience towards an endorsement in Bilingual education described in the ONU catalogue.
